CITIZENS DEMANDED INNOVATION
The CRTM needed to increase knowledge about the mobility of citizens in the Community of Madrid in order to improve service to citizens, through the planning of transport infrastructure and services.
The Madrid Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM), responsible for coordinating a network of over 40 operators managing more than 7 million daily journeys in the Community of Madrid, collaborated with Virtual Desk to implement a big data analytics platform. This solution has improved understanding of citizen mobility, optimized infrastructure and service planning, and provided a more efficient and satisfactory transport experience for users.
To obtain this knowledge, until that moment he only had the traditional system of household surveys, clearly obsolete and whose execution was quite costly.

Lack of interoperability
The biggest challenge was to design a new information system that could support the storage and processing of large amounts of structured information.
- Resource optimization: The high demand for transport in a city like Madrid required more efficient management of fleets and schedules.
- User experience: It was crucial to improve passenger satisfaction through accurate information and personalized services.
- Sustainability: Reducing environmental impact required smarter planning of routes and resources.
- Operational complexity: Coordinating an extensive network of buses and services required advanced tools for real-time decision making.
Virtual Desk designed and implemented an analytics platform based on big data technologies, using HortonWorks and Spark, which included:
- Data Lake for data management: A solution capable of ingesting and storing validation data from all operators, along with external sources such as SAEs, Open Data, meteorological and environmental information.
- Advanced and predictive analytics: Algorithms to transform validation data into routes, complete journeys, transport modal chains, origin-destination matrices and predictive demand models.
- Real-time processing: Analytical tools to monitor the transport system in response to events such as demonstrations or incidents, allowing for immediate adjustments.
- Resource optimization: Models to identify usage patterns, points of attraction in the city and fraud patterns, improving service planning.
- Regulatory compliance: Implementation of security measures aligned with the GDPR to protect user data.
Our platform guarantees accurate, real-time data exchange between institutions, improving reliability and providing a more efficient service for dependent individuals.
